Energy Efficiency Advice for Hotels and Pubs

Heating is the largest area where the hospitality industry can make energy savings, overall with simple and inexpensive steps, savings of up to 20% can be made, for example:

Heating

  • Install seven-day time controls and set them to reflect peak hours
  • Control heating costs – reducing temperatures by just 1 ºC will cut energy consumption by 8%
  • Use draught proofing around windows and doors. 20% of your heat can be lost through poorly insulated window frames and single glazed windows
  • Reduce temperatures in empty bedrooms - whilst they aren't in use make savings

Air conditioning

  • Check and update automatic timing controls to prevent air conditioning working when it isn’t needed. Try linking external doors to the air conditioning so that if they are opened the air conditioning is automatically turned off
  • Set air conditioning temperature controls so that it only comes on when the temperature reaches a certain temperature

Lighting

  • Label light switches to avoid lighting areas that aren’t in use. This could reduce lighting costs by around 15%
  • Fit energy saving light bulbs – they use 75% less electricity than standard light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer

Refrigeration

  • To keep expensive refrigeration costs under control consider equipment location. To reduce running costs, appliances such as fridges, freezers and ice makers should not be situated in a cellar or in direct sunlight or close to ovens or radiators
  • Keep refrigerator doors closed and don’t leave refrigeration equipment open for longer than necessary
  • Don’t keep chill cabinets unnecessarily low – every extra 5 ºC of cooling can add an extra 10-20% to your costs
