The Carbon Trust highlights that on average offices waste £6,000 each year by leaving equipment on over weekends and bank holidays. Office equipment is the fastest growing area of energy use; you can save up to 20% by taking inexpensive simple steps:

Electrical equipment

  • Use office equipment’s (PCs, monitors, faxes and printers) energy saving features
  • Did you know that laptops use 90% less energy?
  • Switch off PC screens when not in use, screens do not use less energy when in ‘screen-saver’ mode. PC screen consumption can often represent at least a third of the electricity consumption in a modern office. Most of the wasted energy is given off as heat which your air conditioning unit will have to get rid of in the summer…using more energy!
  • Use a seven-day timer on equipment such as printers, vending machines and water coolers and save up to 70% on energy costs
  • Turn off all equipment and lights after hours – simple and makes huge savings

Lighting

  • Make use of natural daylight, this could reduce lighting costs by up to 19%
  • Fit infra-red presence detectors to switch off lights when rooms or desks are unoccupied
  • Fit energy saving light bulbs – they use 75% less electricity than standard light bulbs and last up to 10 times longer
