Yell Case Study

Yell Group make cost savings on its electricity supply whilst showing a commitment to renewable electricity.

Overview

Yell is a leading international directories business operating in classified advertising markets in the UK, US, Spain and Latin America through printed, online and telephone-based media. Yell’s principal brands in the UK include: Yellow Pages, Yell.com and 118 24 7. In the UK, Yell employs 4,000 people throughout a network of offices.

Yell is recognised for a clear and unwavering commitment to corporate responsibility that is inextricably linked to the continuous success of the business. Yell is keen to ensure that it not only receives the most competitively priced electricity but also shows a commitment to renewable electricity.

  • Environmental Commitment

Yell is committed to taking a responsible approach to the environment, working with suppliers to ensure their impact on the environment is minimised. Yell wanted to choose an electricity supplier that was equally committed to supplying electricity from cleaner low-carbon sources.

  • Competitively Priced Electricity

Yell works hard to manage the business in a responsible way, keeping its overheads to a minimum. Cost savings that are made on essential business services are transferred to its customers.

To ensure that Yell gets the most competitively priced electricity supply, it uses British Independent Utilities (BIU) to tender and negotiate annual electricity contracts. BIU was instructed to find the best priced electricity with a significant proportion of that electricity from renewable sources.

Opus Energy has supplied Yell with non-half hourly metered electricity for four years, each year quoting the lowest price for the electricity supply. Throughout this time, Opus has delivered on its environmental promise. Each year the proportion of electricity that has been purchased from cleaner low-carbon sources has incrementally increased. Between April 2006 and March 2007, 66% of the energy supplied by Opus Energy came from cleaner low-carbon sources - 47% from renewable generators and 19% from cleaner power produced by Combined Heat and Power (CHP) generators.

Results

As a result of using Opus Energy as its electricity supplier, Yell has seen significant improvements in the following:

  • Cost-Savings

Opus Energy has consistently offered the lowest priced electricity quotes – reducing operational costs. By saving money on essential business costs, Yell can invest the savings into developing customer focused products and keeping business costs down.

  • Greater Environmental Focus

In addition to Yell’s proven commitment to the environment, using Opus Energy for its electricity supply means further minimisation of the impact on the environment.

  • Improved Forecasting

Since choosing Opus Energy, Yell has a better clarity of electricity consumption and billing data as well as an improved quality of annual reconciliation statements. Opus’ efficient account handling has resulted in Yell having access to the most up to date consumption data, receiving accurate electricity consumption and billing information each month. As a result, Yell is able to reliably forecast against annual budgets, which is vitally important for accurate business reporting.

Jon Buckley, Operations and Compliance Manager at Yell, said “I am thoroughly impressed with Opus Energy. In the UK, we have 4,000 employees all relying on electricity to power their working day, so it is vitally important that we minimise these costs. The electricity prices we receive are consistently the most competitive – saving us money. The clarity and access to electricity consumption data means that we can monitor our usage closely and budget more effectively with greater control. In addition, choosing a supplier that has a strong environmental commitment was imperative, as we are committed to managing the business in a responsible way.”
