Opus Energy employees raise over £9,500 running the New York Marathon for the NSPCC

03.11.2008

Four intrepid team members of Opus Energy are recovering from their heroic efforts of running the New York Marathon this Sunday 2nd November.

They made the 7,000 mile round trip across the Atlantic in order to raise more than £9,500 for the children’s charity NSPCC.

All four runners finished with times only three minutes apart, with the fastest time of 4 hours and 28 minutes achieved by Senior Analyst, David Soper.

The team of four was led by Opus Energy’s MD and founder Charlie Crossley Cooke, who chose to take part rather then delegate when it came to this challenge. He finished in 4 hours, 31 minutes.

He said: “This was the first marathon ever taken part in. Running through the streets of New York with the crowd cheering us on was an amazing experience. It was exhilarating and exhausting.

I visited an NSPCC centre last year and was so moved by their work. I wanted to give my employees the opportunity to take part in a fantastic event like this, and to raise money for this great cause – I had the company pay for their flights, accommodation and entry to the marathon, so all they had to do was focus on raising those donations and get running!”

Garry Burrows, Corporate Accounts Back Office, completed in 4 hours 30minutes, and Kerry Poulter, Marketing Specialist completed in 4 hours 32 minutes.

For Kerry, the marathon had particular significance. She said: “My dad was a marathon runner, but it’s something that I’d never attempted before now. When he passed away last year, I decided I wanted to live the experiences that he had.”

“Running on the day was physically and emotionally tiring, but when I crossed the finish line it felt like such an achievement. My dad would have been proud.”

Opus Energy is a leading supplier of electricity to businesses across the UK. Now including this year’s marathon, the company has raised over £18,000 for the NSPCC since 2007 through a host of fundraising activities.
